About Meredith Ann Simmons

Meredith Simmons is a battle-tested, innovation-driven transactional lawyer who leads global deal & operations teams to success. As an avid equestrian and long-time marathoner, Meredith teaches clients to get their businesses “back in the saddle” and to reach any project’s finish line. She has confidently guided public companies, private fund managers, and a wide variety of tech, retail, and hospitality clients through everything from complex global transactions to streamlining their legal and ops departments. She’s also known for helping clients achieve that 26.2 on their bucket-lists!  Throughout her career in business and law, Meredith has a proven track record of solving thorny problems, and building the frameworks that unlock and build value in client businesses.

Most recently, Meredith Simmons was General Counsel of a major Irvine, CA patent enforcement firm that invests in intellectual property, life sciences, and other developed technologies. As the firm’s New York-based General Counsel, Meredith was responsible for driving management’s legal efforts in building an investment platform for the acquisition of mature technology and biotech companies, as well as other absolute return assets. In addition to managing a team of licensing and patent attorneys, she also led deal teams and governance campaigns in major domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, including a ~ US$275mm secondary portfolio of life sciences assets. Some of the assets in that portfolio acquisition included companies developing cutting-edge technologies in the fight against COVID-19.

Prior to her work in technology transactions, Meredith Simmons led her own hedge fund and private equity consulting practice,Telmarine LLC (f/k/a Thistle Partners LLC). Meredith was pivotal in guiding clients through fund formation best-practices, providing transactional support, and drafting regulatory, political, and policy research in both U.S. and European markets. Meredith also actively consulted with top private equity and social enterprise funds. While leading Telmarine LLC, Meredith also served as interim Chief Operating Officer to Ziba Capital Management LLC, a governance-oriented hedge fund start-up led by two accomplished investment professionals.

Meredith’s success in her consulting practice was influenced by her time at Mason Capital Management, LLC. Meredith was Mason’s first-ever Chief Compliance Officer & General Counsel from 2011-2018. She created a legal and regulatory program for this established multi-billion dollar event-driven manager and advised partners and key stakeholders on trading, regulatory, political, employment, and tax policy matters. Meredith managed outside counsel on key governance transactions and litigations; led the team in creating an affiliated broker-dealer (Mason Capital Group, LLC); and liaised with major counterparties throughout her tenure at Mason. Other accomplishments included leading the firm’s global Best Execution Committee, serving on the firm’s Valuation Committee, and creating global cybersecurity and anti-money laundering programs in compliance with U.S. and European regulation.

Before these career-defining roles, Meredith Simmons also worked at Cantor Fitzgerald Securities, Inc., as well as several major domestic and international law firms, including Holland & Knight, LLP; Winston & Strawn, LLP; and Epstein Becker & Green, PC. While at Epstein Becker & Green, Meredith served as a long-term secondee to Royal Bank of Scotland’s Global Banking and Market’s division and discovered a renewed passion for transactional work and a new passion for regulatory compliance.

Education & Personal

Meredith’s educational path took her from the East Coast to the West Coast and back again. She first attended the University of California in Los Angeles, CA, where she graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She later received a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. and completed her education with a Masters of Law from New York University School of Law, where she served as an articles editor on the Journal of Law and Business.

Meredith Simmons has not only dedicated herself to the legal and financial sectors, she was born-and-raised a committed philanthropist. She currently serves as Board Member of Crossroads Community Services, Inc., a Midtown Manhattan soup kitchen, women’s shelter, and choice pantry, and the BecomingX Foundation, a U.S. and U.K.-based educational philanthropy committed to helping children all over the world achieve their highest potential. Meredith is also a Board Member for the International Institute in Spain, a 120-year-old American educational institution in the heart of Madrid connecting Spanish and American culture and is also dedicated to the educational advancement of women.

Outside of her professional and philanthropic endeavors, Meredith Simmons is a dedicated amateur equestrian. Learning to ride as an adult has taught Meredith a lot about resilience and the importance of always getting back on the horse. Additionally, she is a 15x marathoner who has run races all over the world (but the NYC Marathon will always be her favorite). Of note is the 2013 New York City marathon. She completed this run alongside her brother to help raise funds for the NYRR Team for Kids. Running has long been a passion, and the support of the running community has given her a lifetime of memories and “finish line moments.”

Whether at the in gate or the finish line; in her personal, philanthropic, or professional endeavors; Meredith Simmons is a dedicated team player with a strong desire to learn and a passion to succeed.

Meredith lives in New York City with her partner John and her dog, Roo. Unfortunately, Meredith’s horse, Joey, did not fit in a New York City apartment.
